Do you know what Coccydynia is? That word sounds good. However.. Coccydynia is actually a medical term used to describe pain or discomfort that occurs in the coccyx area at the bottom of the spine. The coccyx is a small structure made up of several segments of bone that make up the lower end of the human spine. If pain or discomfort occurs in this area, it is called coccydynia.

What causes coccydynia? Some of them:

  1. Direct Trauma: Fall with a direct impact on the coccyx, such as falling from a height or a hard impact during sports.
  2. Birth: Women who have just given birth sometimes experience coccyx injuries due to the pressure exerted during the delivery process.
  3. Repetitive Injury: Certain activities or positions that trigger repeated friction or pressure on the coccyx, such as sitting in an unergonomic position for a long time.

In coccydynia injuries, remedial massage can be an option in treatment and care. This is especially so if the pain or discomfort is caused by muscle strain or imbalance affecting the tailbone area or the area around it.

Remedial massage can help treat or reduce coccydynia injuries by,

  1. Reduction of Muscle Tension: If the muscles around the coccyx area are in tension or spasm, massage can help reduce this tension, relieve pain and increase flexibility.
  2. Improved Blood Circulation: Massage can increase blood flow to the affected area, aiding in the healing process and reducing inflammation.
  3. Flexibility and Movement Recovery: Remedial massage can help loosen tight muscle tissue and aid in the restoration of flexibility and normal range of motion.

However, it is important to remember that remedial massage should be performed by a trained and qualified therapist who understands the condition of coccydynia and how to treat associated muscle and soft tissue problems. Before trying any remedial massage or therapy, it is highly recommended to consult a medical professional first, especially if you are experiencing bothersome symptoms or if you have a history of injury or underlying health problems.

So be sure to discuss treatment options with your doctor, healthcare professional or therapist, before deciding on remedial massage.
